Arctium lappa

Burdock

Burdock (Arctium lappa) is a classic depurative herb traditionally used to support the skin and clear complexion. A botanical profile from Amina's herb database.

Burdock is a striking plant with broad leaves and bristly, clinging burrs, often growing along riverbanks and mountain paths. Amina has found it across the French countryside, where its softer, non-spiky leaves set it apart from the many thistles it is so easily confused with. The medicinal part is the root, which grows extremely thick and strong and takes real effort to dig out of the ground.

Traditional and historical use

Burdock root has a long history in Western herbal traditions, where it has been valued primarily as a depurative (a herb traditionally thought to support the body's natural clearing processes). Traditionally it has been used to:

  • Support the skin, particularly in relation to complexion and clear, healthy skin
  • Work with conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, acne and psoriasis in traditional practice
  • Support the body's everyday cleansing and elimination pathways
  • Complement other traditional skin and liver herbs as part of a wider approach

Its reputation as a skin herb runs through many old herbals, where the root was often paired with other depurative plants such as dandelion and red clover.

How Amina considers it

In Amina's practice, burdock is one of many herbs that may be considered for people working with skin concerns, often alongside herbs that support digestion and elimination. It is always chosen as part of an individualised plan that takes the whole person into account, never used in isolation or as a one-size-fits-all remedy. If burdock feels relevant for you, it is best explored within a tailored consultation.

Safety and considerations

Burdock belongs to the daisy (Asteraceae) family, so those with known sensitivities to plants in this family should take care. As with any herb, it may interact with medications and is not suitable for everyone, including during pregnancy and breastfeeding without guidance. Always seek advice from a qualified practitioner before use, and let your practitioner know about any other medicines or supplements you are taking.

This profile is educational and describes traditional use. It is not a treatment recommendation.
