Galium aparine

Clivers

Clivers (Galium aparine) is a wild lymphatic herb traditionally used to support the skin and lymphatic system. A botanical profile from Amina's herb database.

Clivers (Galium aparine) is a sprawling wild herb often spotted scrambling through hedgerows and along pathways, where its sticky, finely haired leaves cling to clothing as you pass. It is also known as goosegrass or cleavers, and it has a long history of traditional use as a gentle lymphatic and skin herb.

Traditional and historical use

Clivers has been valued by herbalists for generations. Traditionally it has been used to:

  • Support the lymphatic system and the body's natural clearing of fluid
  • Work with the skin, particularly where the skin is irritated or congested
  • Support the kidneys and the body's normal fluid balance, owing to its traditional reputation as a diuretic
  • Soothe the skin when applied topically as a poultice or cool wash
  • Provide a fresh, cleansing herbal tea made from the steeped aerial parts

It has a particular folk association with swollen lymphatic glands, where it was traditionally thought to help the lymph nodes do their work. The fresh young growth has also been eaten as a wild green, tasting better lightly cooked than raw.

How Amina considers it

In Amina's practice, clivers is one of many herbs that may be considered for people whose skin and lymphatic system are part of the wider picture, often alongside herbs such as calendula or burdock. It is never used in isolation or as a fixed remedy: any herb is chosen as part of an individualised plan that reflects the whole person, which is something Amina explores in a consultation.

Safety and considerations

Clivers is generally regarded as a gentle herb, but it is not right for everyone. Direct contact with the fresh plant can occasionally cause a skin rash in sensitive people. Because of its traditional diuretic reputation, it warrants extra care for anyone with kidney concerns or taking related medications. As with any herb, clivers can interact with medication and is not appropriate in every situation, including pregnancy. Always seek advice from a qualified practitioner before use.
