Origanum dictamnus
Dittany (Cretan Dittany)
Cretan dittany (Origanum dictamnus) is an ancient herb unique to Crete, traditionally used as a tea and a symbol of love. A botanical profile from Amina's herb database.
Cretan dittany (Origanum dictamnus), sometimes called hop marjoram, is an aromatic herb unique to the rocky mountains and surrounding country of Crete. This ancient Minoan plant has been referenced by classical authors for thousands of years and carries a rich folklore that still colours the way it is regarded today.
Traditional and historical use
Dittany appears throughout Greek myth and ancient writing, and traditionally it has been valued in the following ways:
- Aristotle wrote of wild goats wounded by hunters' arrows seeking out dittany, an image that linked the herb with wound care in folklore
- Stories tell that Aphrodite travelled to Crete to gather dittany when Aeneas, the founder of Rome, was wounded
- Hippocrates is said to have used the herb for stomach complaints
- In modern Crete it is still brewed as a tea and used in traditional beauty and skincare preparations
- The Cretans named it "Erondas" (love), offering a bunch of dittany as a gift of devotion, since gathering it meant climbing steep cliffs, and it has long been associated with romance
The plant is listed as a threatened species on the IUCN Red List, so finding it growing wild is a genuine privilege.
How Amina considers it
In Amina's practice, dittany is appreciated as much for its history and aromatic character as anything else, and any role it might play is always considered within an individualised plan rather than in isolation. As an aromatic member of the oregano and marjoram family, it sits among the Mediterranean herbs Amina draws on when working with each person's wider picture during a consultation.
Safety and considerations
Dittany is a culinary and beverage herb with a long history of traditional use as a tea, and food-style use is generally low risk. As with any herb, concentrated preparations and essential oils are a different matter and are not appropriate for everyone, including during pregnancy. Because it is a threatened wild species, sustainably sourced material matters. Always seek advice from a qualified practitioner before using any herb therapeutically.
