Meadowsweet

Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) is a gentle herb traditionally valued to support comfortable digestion and a settled, soothed digestive tract. A profile from Amina's herb database.

Meadowsweet is a soft, cream-flowered herb of the rose family with a long history in European herbal tradition. It is one of the herbs Amina enjoys growing in her own garden, and one she often returns to when thinking about the comfort of the digestive tract.

Traditional and historical use

Across centuries of folk use, meadowsweet has been valued to:

  • Support a settled, comfortable stomach and work with the digestive tract as a soothing herb
  • Help with hyperacidity, heartburn and that gurgling, uneasy feeling after meals
  • Support people who are moving away from antacid-style approaches, used as a gentle traditional alternative
  • Offer astringent and muco-protective qualities for the lining of the gut
  • Provide a calming pre-dinner tea to support digestion, taken fresh or dried

The herb was used by the Druids and traditionally turned to for gastritis, peptic discomfort and nausea, as well as to ease fevers and the aches associated with rheumatism (Hoffman, D). In 1839 a German botanist identified that it contained salicin, the same constituent family later associated with white willow and the development of aspirin, which is part of why meadowsweet has such a long reputation as a soothing botanical. It is also noted as a source of vitamins A, B, C and K (Isabel Shipard).

You may find it sits naturally alongside other digestive herbs in Amina's conditions library, particularly where uneasy digestion overlaps with SIBO symptoms.

How Amina considers meadowsweet

In Amina's practice, meadowsweet is one of many herbs that may be considered for people who experience reflux, gurgling, an over-acid stomach or general digestive unease. It is always chosen as part of an individualised plan that reflects the whole person, never used in isolation or as a one-size-fits-all remedy.

Safety and considerations

Because meadowsweet naturally contains salicylates, it is generally not suitable for anyone who is sensitive to aspirin or salicylate-containing products, and care is warranted in children and during pregnancy. As with any herb, it can interact with medications and is not appropriate for everyone. Always seek advice from a qualified practitioner before use, and you are welcome to start with a consultation or to get in contact.
