St Mary's Thistle (Milk Thistle)

St Mary's thistle (milk thistle) is a traditional liver herb long valued to support liver function, digestion and natural detoxification. A profile from Amina's herb database.

St Mary's thistle, also widely known as milk thistle, is one of the most cherished liver herbs in Western herbal medicine. It has been used for thousands of years, with mentions reaching back as far as the Bible, and grows wild across much of Europe including southwest England.

Traditional and historical use

The seeds of St Mary's thistle contain silymarin, a group of flavanolignans regarded as its key active constituents. Traditionally this herb has been valued to:

  • Support healthy liver function and the liver's natural protective processes
  • Support the liver's own capacity to renew and restore itself
  • Support the flow of bile from the gall bladder
  • Settle digestive upsets, particularly nausea, poor appetite and bloating
  • Offer antioxidant support
  • Support breastfeeding mothers in promoting healthy milk supply

It has long been turned to before a period of natural detoxification, in the traditional view that a well-supported liver clears more comfortably. Its soothing, demulcent quality has also seen it used historically for irritated or inflamed internal tissue.

How Amina considers it

In Amina's practice, St Mary's thistle is one of many herbs that may be considered for people whose liver and digestion are under sustained load, including those working through chronic stealth infections such as Lyme disease and lingering fatigue. It is always chosen as part of an individualised plan tailored to the whole person, never used in isolation.

Safety and considerations

St Mary's thistle is part of the daisy (Asteraceae) family, which is worth noting for anyone with a known sensitivity to that group of plants. As with any herb, it can interact with certain medications and is not appropriate for everyone. Always seek advice from a qualified practitioner before use, especially if you are taking prescription medicines, are pregnant or are managing an existing health condition.
