Alchemilla vulgaris

Lady's Mantle

Lady's Mantle is a traditional astringent herb long valued in European folk medicine for women's health and the digestive system. A botanical profile from Amina's herb database.

Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla vulgaris) is a low-growing herb of the rose family, easily recognised by its softly pleated, fan-shaped leaves that catch dew at their centre. Amina has found it growing wild across Iceland and Norway, where both the common and the Alpine Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla alpina) flourish. It has a long history in European folk herbalism, particularly in connection with women's health.

Traditional and historical use

The aerial parts have traditionally been valued as an astringent herb. Historically it has been used to:

  • Work as a gentle astringent in herbal preparations
  • Support the body during heavy or uncomfortable menstrual cycles
  • Support women through the changes of perimenopause and menopause
  • Support comfort in the reproductive system, including in relation to endometriosis
  • Support the digestive tract, including during occasional loose stools and gastrointestinal upset

Its astringent, toning reputation is reflected in its old common names, which often linked the herb to women's wellbeing across the life stages.

How Amina considers it

In Amina's practice, Lady's Mantle is one of many herbs that may be considered for women navigating menstrual or menopausal changes, or for those wanting support for the digestive system. It is never used in isolation. Any herb is chosen as part of an individualised plan that takes the whole person into account, and you can read more about how this works on the consultations page.

Safety and considerations

Lady's Mantle is generally regarded as a gentle herb when used traditionally, though its astringent, tannin-rich nature means it does not suit everyone. It is not considered appropriate during pregnancy, and as with any herb it may interact with medications or existing health conditions. Always seek advice from a qualified practitioner before use, and feel free to get in touch with any questions.
